The mother of 8-year-old Liquarry Jefferson - who was fatally shot in the stomach by his young cousin - shocked prosecutors yesterday by asking for a jury trial date in her involuntary manslaughter case.
Lakeisha Gadson, who has four surviving children, is accused of letting Liquarry’s half-brother bring an illegal gun into their Dorchester apartment and leave it in an unlocked dresser drawer.
Prosecutors had expected Gadson, 33, to enter guilty pleas on charges related to the shooting that killed Liquarry, but a trial date was set instead after a 20-minute sidebar with Suffolk Superior Court Judge Peter Lauriat.
“While we expected a plea this morning, we’re very confident in the evidence we’ve developed in this case and we look forward to trying this case and holding Lakeisha Gadson responsible for her actions,” said Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
A trial date was set for April 5, 2010. Defense attorney Peter Krupp declined to comment on whether Gadson intended to change her plea.
“She is trying to be honest and truthful, and she cannot admit to something that she did not do. She can’t say that she knew something that she did not know,” said Krupp. “I am hopeful that she can resolve this short of a trial. If we have to try the case we will.”
Liquarry was fatally shot in the stomach by his 7-year-old cousin on June 24, 2007, as the boys played. Gadson reportedly told officers two men shot at her son.
The boy’s half-brother, Jayquan McConnico, was sentenced to five years in a youth detention center after he pleaded guilty to charges of misleading a police officer and involuntary manslaughter last October. McConnico was a juvenile at the time of the shooting.
